Shatter resistant coatings of bulbs has become common place in the food industry, following a number of highly publicized articles where various food products become contaminated with glass.
Applying shatter resistant materials to normal light components is a relatively simple process. Either completely enclose the luminaries in a transparent glass free structure, or coat the bulbs in a resilient polymer coating. In standard lighting or heat lamp fixtures, coatings approved for such elements are readily available, however, unique challenges arise when most coatings that have very effective shatter resistant properties will also completely block UV emissions. UV is the primary component for attracting insects to a specific light source. Balancing the two is the key.
The solution with insects attracting lamps is not so simple. First, you cannot completely enclose the trap , as it would prevent the insects from entering. Second, coating the tube with the normal polymer would not work. This is because the vast majority of polymers are very effective at eliminating Ultra Violet light. This means that the UV light emitted by the bulbs would not get out to attract insects to the trap or collecting light. Furthermore, if the bulbs are coated in certain unsuitable materials the UV can break down the plastic coating causing it to become brittle and thus allow the glass and phosphorus material within the bulb to escape if the tube does break.
Leptraps bulbs are coated in Virgin FEP. This material (similar to Teflon) is unique in that, properly formulated and processed, it allows the transmission of up to 94% of the UV emitted by the insect attracting bulbs; neither do its mechanical properties suffer with exposure to UV light.
This coating is shrunk onto the tube in a special process, which ensures that should the bulb be crushed or subject to a heavy blow resulting in fracture of the glass tube, the glass shards and phosphorus material contained within the bulb will be retained within the coating. While it is not possible to guarantee 100% of the glass and phosphorus material will be retained in 100% of all breakages. This method and material has been found to be the effective method so far devised.
If you are environmentally conscious, request shatter proof bulbs for you traps and collecting lights.
